From global to local: 5th APPC to discuss about global perspectives, features, and challenges of the ‘New Globalization’
The world has already entered a new phase of globalization and not everyone understands its implications.
The “New Globalization”, also known as “Globalization 4.0”, will take the spotlight in this year’s celebration of the Development Policy Research Month spearheaded by the Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS).
With the theme, “Navigating the New Globalization: Local Actions for Global Challenges”, the DPRM aims to promote awareness of the new wave of globalization as well as the challenges that come along with it.
To shed more light on this topic, experts from various fields will gather at the Annual Public Policy Conference (APPC) on September 19 at the Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila. The 5th APPC is the culminating activity of the DPRM where experts and representatives from the government, private sector, academe, and civil society convene to engage in evidence-based discussion of issues, opportunities, and policy options.
The first plenary session of the APPC will provide a global perspective on the New Globalization including its features, challenges, and implications to give the audience a general background of the theme.
From a global perspective, discussions will move to a more local focus, specifically on how countries can steer their respective economies, amid the new developments brought by the New Globalization, in multilateral agreements, mega-value chains, public-private partnerships, as well as in international law and the justice system. Speakers for this session include Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio who will talk about the West Philippine Sea, one of the hot issues in the Philippines today, and Calum Cameron, a digital innovation consultant of Proud Engineers which is based in Estonia, widely lauded as the world’s most advanced digital nation.
The APPC will conclude with a discourse on what the Philippines can do, with the help of all of its stakeholders, to navigate the New Globalization. Officials of various government agencies and institutions, including Secretary Silvestre Bello (Department of Labor and Employment), Secretary Francisco Duque III (Department of Health), Secretary Eduardo Año (Department of the Interior and Local Government), Undersecretary Rafaelita Aldaba (Department of Trade and Industry), Manila City Mayor Francisco Domagoso, Chairman Arsenio Balisacan (Philippine Competition Commission), Deputy Governor Francisco Dakila (Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas), Professor Gerardo Sicat (University of the Philippines-School of Economics), and Dr. Alfredo Pascual (Institute of Corporate Directors), will share their views on how to manage the challenges and harness the opportunities of the New Globalization.
This year’s APPC, organized by PIDS, is supported by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, Department of Foreign Affairs – Office of the Undersecretary for International Economic Relations, Department of the Interior and Local Government, National Economic and Development Authority, Philippine Competition Commission, Department of Trade and Industry – Bureau of International Trade Relations, Asian Development Bank, and the Australian government’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
